Spring has sprung in Australia and with the much welcomed return of warmer weather, this means I get to finally put away my winter coats & comfy clothes and pull out my spring/summer wardrobe styles! It’s great timing as I’m currently deciding on what exactly to pack for my upcoming Europe trip in a week’s time. Basically, over the coming days I’m going to be Marie Kondo-ing my clothes and seeing what “sparks joy” and what doesn’t. This happens at least twice a year and I love doing it especially at the start of spring because being such a girly girl, there’s a chance I can convince myself that it’s purely practical to invest in some new styles. And when it comes to spring fashion, a brand that has consistently been on my radar for over a decade is none other than Review!
Review is an Australian fashion brand that has been around for over 30 years and first started off in our country’s fashion capital of Melbourne. Their penchant for creating feminine styles & designing luxe dresses in a myriad of colours caught my eye in my early twenties, so this is a brand which I have invested in for over a decade now! At one point I’d say that over 80% of my working & weekend wardrobe consisted of clothes from Review, so it’s safe to say I have been a dedicated fan of the brand! Admittedly that even now whilst I’m discovering other brands and have definitely introduced a little more variety in terms of labels & styles, Review is still a store that I am confident I can always go to when I’m in search of an ultra-feminine piece that will work for the office to the weekend with ease.
It’s always fascinated me how fashion truly reflects the height of popular culture and becomes the visual signature of a certain point in time. My true height of obsession with Review was circa the TV series of Mad-Men, when I was consciously emulating the Betty Draper and Joan Holloway looks through my own wardrobe. As the series progressed from showing us the early 60’s Jackie Kennedy-esque styles, so did the pieces from Review and countless other brands, aiming to tap into the fashion zeitgeist of the moment. As Mad Men progressed through the decade on our screens, we ended up stylistically returning to the mid & late 60’s, via mod-style shift dresses & miniskirts. And then it was all over as fast fashion came on the scene with a bit of help from social media.
So this is why I’m beyond excited (and relieved) that a return to feminine styles is finally (!) back in 2019. And there’s probably no better time to invest in some gorgeous new pieces than now in September, particularly with Aussie racing season almost upon us! Even better, Review’s new spring collection has hit stores down under and with it comes a myriad of options that will get you in the “rich girl look” without having to fork over half your salary! Very excitingly, I’ve been offered a lifetime dream opportunity to collaborate with Review on Instagram and the piece I chose for Spring 2019 was their “Roma Love dress”. I was initially attracted to this dress because of the sleeves – it has very light & sheer sleeves that are slightly puffed – which is perfect for trying out the puff sleeves trend we’ve been witnessing all year. The dress is also on point, considering that polka dots have made a big comeback on the runways for the very recent Spring/Summer 2020 collections, as seen at the Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera and Kate Spade New York shows!
I styled this dress with black T-bar heels and accessorised with my black felt hat – but I also believe you could try using gold heels as well to dress it up a bit more. A perfect option for the upcoming spring races, this would also look gorgeous styled with a red or black fascinator too. Review also have the same colourway & print in a longer style dress which you can check out, it’s called the Roma Love Frill dress and it is designed to be worn as a midi-length style. Whilst the Roma Love dress I’m wearing isn’t available yet, it will be shortly as this is part of their new Spring collection. So if you are really in love with this piece, then make sure you keep an eye out online and in stores, as it will be available very soon!
Playful sophistication – it’s what Review does best through their fun & classic designs. It’s no wonder then that Australian women of all ages, from their 20’s through to 50’s & above, still adore this label. It’s a brand that has managed to survive the Dynasty era of the 80’s, win over a whole new wave of fans during the Mad-Men era in the late 2000’s and manage to stay strong during the Athleisure dominated takeover (thank God that’s finally ending). Now Bougie style is back on the sartorial minds of the public, I’m sure Review is going to be one brand that will be offering up plenty more for us to get excited over once again! If nothing else, it means that my Review cropped cardigans, satin pussy-bow blouses, pencil skirts and shift dresses are now considered to be back in style (were they ever really out of style?!), which is excellent news not only for my bank account but also my Insta feed! #liveyourdressedlife
If you’re interested in checking out more from Review, then make sure you head on over to their website, or check out their Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. They not only have beautiful dresses, coats & separates, but also offer gorgeous accessories, shoes, kids-wear, plus there is even a bridal selection which is perfect for bridesmaid and mother of the bride styles. Review also provide international shipping and a loyalty app that offers discounts plus birthday vouchers too.
