When it comes to style there’s one thing that almost everyone agrees upon, which will take an outfit to the next level – a gorgeous designer handbag. And when it comes to luxury labels, nearly everyone has a brand or two which they personally identify with. Being a Francophile myself, I love anything connected to France so I have a personal affinity with the brands which emanate from the country’s fashion capital of Paris. When I was recently invited to attend the Lancel Paris media event in Sydney to view their Fall/Winter 2019 collection at a breakfast showing, from their marketing team, I was over the moon – it was an instant RSVP of yes!
Maison de Lancel
Lancel is a French luxury brand with an extremely deep history – Maison Lancel was founded in 1876 and is still going strong more than 140 years later! This is no easy feat and it means Lancel is one of oldest & most experienced leather-making brands in the entire world. Revered worldwide for their leather-goods, handbags, accessories and travel luggage creations, Lancel epitomises the French spirit with their designs which combine expert craftmanship & functionality.
Founded in Paris where their designs are created, the brand ensures their products are crafted in Italy, so this is a truly European luxury label. Their new collection is sure to appeal to Lancel’s newest customers – the millennials; so let’s take a close look at what Lancel have offered up for us all in their new collection for Fall/Winter 2019!
Attending the Sydney breakfast press event
The breakfast press event was held in an east facing penthouse overlooking the city of Sydney with views for days – however it was the bags which I couldn’t take my eyes off! Taking pride of place, a rainbow of colours and a myriad of styles from Lancel were on display and after being greeted by Stephanie & Marcus from the marketing team, I was able to really enjoy a close up view of the stunning new creations in the collection. I’m going to go through some of my personal favourites which I love and which I believe are the standout pieces.
Charlie de Lancel bag
In any collection of handbags, there is always going to be the one that you are first drawn towards and keep coming back to. I simply couldn’t take my eyes off the “Charlie” bag! On display in both black and red colours, this style just oozes class, elegance and timelessness. I love anything which will stand the test of time, and the Charlie bag (much like the Lancel brand) encapsulates timeless style with practicality.
Made from buffalo leather, it felt smooth to the touch whilst simultaneously it felt quite sturdy. This isn’t a bag that you get the sense that it would lose its shape easily. As Marcus talked me through the material composition, I learnt that the durability of its shape is largely thanks to the use of buffalo leather. Most handbags require a lot of inner boning or “corsetry” to assist in maintaining their shape; this tends to also cause the handbag to weigh a lot. Not so with the Charlie handbag – it felt light and the size was also perfect in my eyes.
I’ve got no hesitations in saying that if I hadn’t already purchased a new handbag earlier that week, that I would have gone out to purchase this handbag myself straight after the event. The Charlie for me is just the ultimate handbag – I was swooning over its shape, the feel of the leather and how roomy it was inside. To me it’s simply the perfect luxury handbag for everyday use, as I could use this for going to my office job plus I could also wear it on weekends as well. Dressed up or dressed down, the Charlie bag is ultra versatile – honestly the hardest choice for me would be deciding on which colour to purchase! Both the red & black colourways were lovely and Lancel also have a variety of other colours as well including a blue “petrol” colour that I wished they had on display so I could see it in real life!
Cara de Lancel zipped camera bag
After taking many photos of the Charlie bag, I realised I needed to put the bag down and open my eyes up to the rest of the collection! The next handbag which caught my eye (and the eyes of other bloggers at the event too!) was the new Cara de Lancel zipped camera bag. I spotted the pink version with its eye-catching strap and also fell in love with this design. It’s compact, the strap is super comfortable and the silver details add the finishing touch.
Don’t let the name of this beauty fool you because the Cara camera bag has room to fit a camera and more! Whilst I was oohing & aahing over the pink/red colour combo, there was also a classic black & white colourway available as well. Perfect for those weekends when you’re on the run, taking your dog for a walk, running errands or even going out for drinks, this is a versatile & chic option for your outfit.
Clic de Lancel crossbody bag
Continuing on with the red colour theme that I seemed to be particularly drawn towards, I spotted the new Clic de Lancel crossbody bag. Now to be honest, at first I didn’t notice it was actually a crossbody style, as the strap was tucked away inside the bag. Initially it appeared to be a clutch style handbag, so I was surprised when I opened this up for a closer look and discovered the strap inside. A quite structured style, this felt super smooth to the touch thanks to the smooth cowhide leather.
The opening clasp on the front is very original too – you need to move the two front silver knobs inwards together to open the bag to find separate sections inside. This bag is the small size in the red/blackcurrant colourway and the signature “L” charm on the front adds the finishing touch. I think this would work wonderfully to add a nice touch with jeans & a tee on the weekend or alternatively dressed up at night used as a clutch bag.
Premier Flirt de Lancel bucket bag
If structured styled handbags aren’t your thing and you’re more into edgy, relaxed vibes then the Premier Flirt de Lancel bucket bag is really worth considering. Re-releasing the Premier Flirt, an iconic signature style of this Maison, this bag is eye-catching thanks to its distinctive design details. What immediately got my attention was the bucket-esque design and leather pom pom details, as well as the topstitched pocket on the lower right hand side. Made from grained calf-skin leather and with a removable shoulder strap, it also comes with the Lancel “L” designed with studs.
Although I much prefer more structured handbag designs, the more I looked at the Premier Flirt design, the more I began to like it! With red lining, it is available in a variety of colours, including black, camel, sky blue, nude and a linen/nude/black combination. Personally I think this is a very Autumn-esque handbag, perfect for pairing with the darker colours and with longer dresses or bohemian styles.
Ninon de Lancel flapbag with handle
One of the first bags that caught my attention when I laid eyes upon the beautiful Lancel handbags was the striking Ninon de Lancel flap bag with handle, in a sunny yellow colour. I’d already seen this bag on social media in a gorgeous coral shade so I was able to easily identify this style. However up close, it truly is stunning and can be worn in a variety of ways thanks to its multi-handle design.
There’s the option to carry the bag by the leather handle which showcases the brand’s name or alternatively to wear this by the metal strap, which lends very rock’n’roll vibes. Available in so many colours, you’ll be sure to find one that you would adore. There was also the camel coloured version on display, which was the creamiest tan colour I think I’ve ever seen – like a very light milk chocolate tone!
Romane de Lancel satchel
Lancel were showcasing a plethora of handbag styles and it comes as no surprise that a satchel bag was included in their collection, as this type of handbag is adored by many women. The Romane de Lancel satchel has an unusual front clasp which took me a while to figure out how to open (you have to lift it up from the bottom) and a wide leather strap. With red grosgrain lining and adorned with the signature “L” charm with studs, this was on display in the nude and dark green colours.
Le Huit de Lancel
Named after Lancel’s original boutique located at 8 Place de l’Opera in Paris, the Le Huit bag is certainly distinctive. I was drawn towards the “Pia” version in the sky blue colour and could see this working very well not just in Autumn/Winter but throughout the warmer seasons as well! With a long shoulder strap that is detachable, there is also a removable chain zipped pouch as a surprising addition which is handy to store cash, cards or keys inside. One of the design elements I really love about the Le Huit de Lancel bag is the two leather & metal poms poms that adorn this item. They are eye-catching, fun and unlike any detail I’ve remembered noticing on another handbag.
My top 3 favourite Lancel bags!
There were a couple more designs available however the above handbags were the ones which I was drawn towards and wanted to showcase here on the blog. As mentioned above, I’m definitely drawn towards more structured handbag styles (probably because I work in a corporate environment), so I find these styles work seamlessly with my weekday outfits. My personal top 3 favourite bags would be the classic Charlie, the new Cara camera zipped bag and the edgy Ninon de Lancel.
Breakfast & Networking
Apart from figuratively drooling over Lancel’s stylish collection of handbags, this was a great opportunity to mix with some of Sydney’s bloggers & creatives and to enjoy a delicious breakfast. I spent so much time taking photos that I wished I could have eaten more, because the breakfast on offer was delicious and oh so instagrammable! There was a sumptuous fruit platter, croissants, cakes, friands, quiches, brownies, yoghurt & muesli and chia puddings.
I also really enjoyed meeting Stephanie & Marcus from Lancel’s marketing team, who actually flew up from Melbourne to organize and host this event. From the moment I arrived they were so welcoming, full of knowledge about the brand’s collection and instantly made me feel at ease! We were even gifted with goodie bags which had delicious cookies inside to take home with us. A special shout out to the delish cookies from Sugar Rush by Steph – for more cookie love you can check out her website, Facebook and Instagram. And another special thanks to my fashion loving friend Irena, for being my “plus one” and helping me out with taking some photos on the day!
Lancel is brand that is absolutely on my radar now… and if you’re anything like me and love brands that have a deep history, a penchant for innovation as well as inherent luxury due to fine craftsmanship & quality materials; then Lancel needs to be on your radar, and shoulder, too! It’s very exciting that this Parisian label is opening up a store right here in Australia, in our fashion capital of Melbourne. And I hope, soon, that they will arrive in Sydney one day too. Until then, I might just have to pop into one of their boutiques when I return to Paris next month!
I hope you have enjoyed this review of Lancel’s Fall/Winter 2019 collection and that this guide has been helpful in providing you with a closer look at their beautiful handbag designs. Let me know in the comments below which bag you personally like the best!
