For me, no other luxury designer brand signifies effortless femininity as well as Chloé . The French Maison was founded in the 1950’s by Gaby Aghion who wanted to infuse style with the feeling of carefree happiness and her legacy has endured thanks to the help of creative designers & directors such as Karl Lagerfeld in the 70’s & 90’s and Stella McCartney in the 2000’s. As much as I adore Chloé ’s enchanting, whimsical and equestrian inspired clothing, it was their handbags which I had been seriously lusting after for at least a solid 12 months.
For my second ever designer handbag purchase, I wanted to really take my time in making the “right” purchase and had been eyeing Chloé ’s Drew, Nile & Tess styles. I knew I was after a handbag which would function as an everyday & evening bag and something I could carry on the weekends or holidays – and this is a pretty big ask from just one item! Ultimately it was the Nile bracelet bag which I decided upon and I believe it is now one of my “forever” bags that I will never part with!
Chloé released their Nile bag in 2017… and it quickly reached that elusive height of being known as the “it girl” bag for that year. Worn by celebrities, fashionistas on Instagram and stylish You-Tubers, the Nile was everywhere! As I’ve only recently commenced my foray into designer purchases, I want to make sure that whatever I invest in has a classic & timeless appeal – and this cult handbag certainly has retained those qualities. Let’s take a closer look at everything to do with this unique & stunning handbag!
The Nile bracelet bag stays true to its luxury brand heritage, drawing upon the label’s equestrian inspired style, with its saddle shape. As the name suggests, this bag features a bracelet handle at the top, the most eye-catching and defining component of the design. What I adore about the Nile bag, is how versatile it is to carry. Being a long-strap bag, you can wear it over the shoulder or cross body and the strap is also removable. The bracelet is multi-functional, it can be used as a handle to carry or nestled in the crook of your arm. With four different ways to wear/carry, the versatility means this can be worn to multiple types of events, dressed up or down depending upon your outfit.
This handbag features a mixture of materials which provides it’s distinctive look and feel. The majority of the item is composed of top-grain calf-skin leather, including the front & back as well as the cross-body strap. The sides and underneath are made of suede, with a thin detail of the calfskin as a contrast against the velvety material. When it comes to the bracelet, brass was selected as the material of choice with the brand’s signature logo on a small circle detail attached to the bracelet. Chloé also make the Nile in a smooth-embossed croc-skin leather, in dark brown and dark blue.
Pockets are always welcomed to assist with storing items in handbags and the Nile features a couple. The main bag has a “phone flat” inner pocket inside – I haven’t used this much other than to store some cards and can’t see myself fitting my mobile inside as it would stretch out the pocket too much for my liking. The back features another pocket which is quite large, almost as large as the bag itself. This is also handy for storing any Opal cards (or Oyster cards, if you live in London!). The strap is adjustable which allows you to change up the length of the handbag and the bag has a magnetic clasp closure.
The Nile bracelet bag comes in three different sizes, mini, small and medium. I decided to purchase mine in the medium size, firstly because the price difference wasn’t that much between the two sizes and secondly because I knew I’d be wearing the handbag a lot over the years and wanted the extra room. I’m very happy that I ended up purchasing the medium size because it really does have a lot of room inside – I can fit my Samsung S8 mobile, compact mirror, lipstick, keys, mints, camera and cards with room to spare. Chloé also have the Nile minaudière bracelet bag, which is a “half-moon” shaped design along with the bracelet handle and it comes in a variety of colours and materials. Yes, it’s tiny compared to the medium Nile bag but you would be able to fit your phone, keys & lipstick inside, so it would be brilliant as an evening bag and definitely one that is on my wish list in the future!
Once I’d decided upon the Nile bracelet bag, the next choice was deciding upon which colour to purchase! Chloé make the Nile in a myriad of colours, including black, grey, beige & white and the colour selection varies depending upon the size. The Chloé Nile seems to have a larger variety of colours available now in the small size compared to the medium size so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re thinking of purchasing this handbag. I loved the “Biscotti Beige” colour as I knew it would be perfect in matching with my wardrobe colour palette, especially during spring & summer where I tend to wear a lot of white & pink.
It can be a challenge to determine whether the colours of handbags which we see online are accurate and I’d read a lot of reviews and seen a lot of photos of this particular colour but in varying shades. In fact, when I first opened up the bag, I wasn’t sure if I had been sent the right colour, as it did look a bit darker than what is shown online. The colour online appears to be a more peachy/pink tone than it actually is. I was worried I’d been sent the Motty Grey colour so I went into the Chloé section in David Jones to see if they had the Motty Grey colour just to compare! And was relieved as the Motty Grey was definitely a lot darker than my one. So it you are after the biscotti beige, hopefully these photos will help you to get a clear idea of the true colour.
How to care for your bag
I’ve had my Nile now for just under 3 months and have been super careful with it, making sure I don’t wear it when it’s supposed to be raining or with dark coloured clothes that could possibly transfer onto the bag. Whilst I initially thought this might be a good everyday bag, since purchasing it I’ve realised that for me, it wouldn’t be practical given that this increases it’s chances of getting marked or stained. This is definitely more of a weekend or going out handbag, although I did take it with me on my recent trip to Prague & Paris!
Caring for leather bags involves the need to regularly condition them every 2-3 months, and I recently did apply a coat of specialised leather conditioner, making sure to avoid the suede fabric on the sides. If you’re going to invest in a designer handbag, then it only makes sense to ensure you are protecting & caring for it to minimise any damage. Also when it comes to storage I keep the paper inside to help it maintain the shape and store it inside it’s Chloé dust-bag as well.
How to tell if the Chloé Nile is genuine
Apart from buying directly from Chloé or a registered retailer, there are a few ways you can determine if the Nile is genuine. Firstly there should be two tags inside the bag – one made of leather with the serial number and a smaller white tag with Chloé written on it along with the serial number that should also be noted on the receipt. Chloé bags are made in Italy and the Nile has the logo and a “made in Italy” stamp on the interior on the inner pocket. The logo should also be stamped on the front flap between two brass points. Finally there should be an authenticity card and you can tell from the quality of the leather and straight, consistent stitching along the bag. I purchased mine from the MyTheresa online store as they had a sale with 30% off this bag a few months ago. I’d definitely recommend checking out their site as the entire purchase & delivery process was smooth and super fast.
Whilst Chloé wasn’t my first ever designer brand which I invested in, it is fast becoming my all-time favourite. I’d love to purchase one of their Tess handbags in the future (there are so many colours in that design to choose from) plus their shoes, sunglasses & clothing are just so beautifully designed and whimsical, it’s hard not to fall in love with everything this luxury house produces. In the meantime though, I’m really happy with this gorgeous bag and it’s definitely one I’d recommend 100% to anyone who is thinking about purchasing it. Whilst it doesn’t have the re-sell value of say a Chanel classic flap, I can’t ever see myself wanting to part with this stunning piece. The style, versatility, unique handle design and obvious quality really makes this a must have designer purchase that can be worn all throughout the year and with a multitude of outfits.
